Set up change types

Available in en es fr

Updated on 10/25/2026

Every change has a type, chosen in the form. The type sets the change's category (and therefore its approval path), its approval flow and the text suggested at creation. The Change types screen (menu Changes › Change types, or the Change types button of the change list) is reserved for administrators.

The supplied types

Three types are supplied, one per category: Standard change (STANDARD), Normal change (NORMAL) and Emergency change (EMERGENCY). When the Process orchestration module (Workflow) is installed, the normal and emergency types receive the CAB and ECAB approval flows, once and for all. You can rename, edit or deactivate these types: they are never rewritten or recreated.

Create or edit a type

Click New type, or Edit next to a type, then fill in:

  • Code: unique identifier, 50 characters at most. It is upper-cased and spaces become _;
  • Category: Standard (pre-approved model: submitting it approves it), Normal (assessment, then approval by the CAB) or Emergency (fast-track approval by the ECAB);
  • Order: position of the type in lists;
  • Active: only an active type is offered for a new change;
  • Name: one field per active language of the instance. The default language's field, marked required, is mandatory; a language left empty shows the default language's name;
  • Approval flow: a published process, started when a change of this type goes to Pending approval. With None — direct approval by the board, the CAB (or the ECAB for an emergency) approves directly from the change page. Without the Process orchestration module, the field is replaced by Process orchestration (Workflow) module unavailable: direct approval by the board.;
  • Suggested description and Suggested rollback plan: texts copied into the form of a new change when this type is chosen, only if the field is still empty. They never alter an existing change.

Click Save.

Good to know

  • No deletion: a type that should no longer be used is deactivated. Changes that carry it keep it, and it is still offered in the type filter of the change list.
  • The category is locked as soon as a change uses the type: The category can no longer change: changes already use this type. Create another type if needed.
  • A flow unpublished since then stays displayed as Current workflow (no longer published); it is kept on save as long as you do not choose another one.
  • Creating an emergency change from an incident requires at least one active Emergency type.
  • The AI assistant instructions button of this screen opens the settings of the change AI assistant.
